02 February 2007 - External Fire and Rescue Audit is Released

Today, Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service released its 2006 Performance Audit. Detailed within the 39 page, Audit Scotland report is an outlined review of the outcomes and impacts of the modernisation agenda which began in 2003.

The 2006 Performance Audit identifies the extent to which modernisations is embedded in the planning, processes and culture of the Service.

It was concluded that Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service:

  • ‘has made notable progress in the delivering of Home Safety Visits and received a COSLA Award for this work.’
  • ‘is demonstrating a strong commitment to diversity, fairness and equality in the workforce…’
  • ‘has a considerable amount of partnership working at a local level and a number of successful joint community safety initiatives. The FRA is an active participant in all Community Safety Partnerships, which are linked to the community planning framework.’
  • ‘has made sophisticated use of risk modelling to inform decisions on the optimum location of stations, and the redeployment of staff and other resources.’

Cllr Ken Harrold, Convenor of the Lothian and Borders Fire Board said: “This Audit is a reflection of just how seamlessly the modernisation agenda has embedded within the Service. In addition, it shows that our service delivery to our communities continues to be first rate. There has been a lot of hard work put into the service improvements and prevention initiatives and this external Audit recognises our success in delivering that work.”

The Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service 2006 Performance Audit report was conducted and produced by Audit Scotland .

Chief Fire Officer, Brian Allaway said: “I am very pleased that this report clearly confirms that our Service continues to be a high performing Fire and Rescue Service which brings great benefits to the communities we all serve.”
