10 November 2006 - Halifax Bank of Scotland Joins Local Fire Service in Community Project

NOVEMBER 10, 2006 - Today employees from the Halifax Bank of Scotland will join Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service(LBFRS) firefighters in a community safety project at the North Edinburgh Arts Centre and Muirhouse Library.

Due to several incidents of wilful fire raising that have put the Arts Centre, Library and common open space at risk, various community groups have come together to support HBOS and LBFRS in improving both the safety of the area and the visual appeal. This open space is used extensively by community members who visit both facilities.

Twenty two volunteers from HBOS, volunteers from LBFRS, Lothian and Borders Police, City of Edinburgh Concierges Service, City of Edinburgh Services for Communities, Muirhouse Library, North Edinburgh Arts Centre and many other community groups will spend the day removing remove fire hazards, applying graffiti paint, planting flowers and shrubs, enhancing seating areas and improving night time safety measures.

In addition, community members will be provided with a phone number to call if they see individuals vandalising or starting fires in the space during the evening. This number will put them in contact with CCTV operators who will be able to train the cameras on that specific area to ensure footage is captured of the individuals in question.

Ken Harrold, Convener of Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Board said: “Prevention is always in the forefront for the Service so it is important that we work both with community organisations and businesses whenever possible to reduce fire risks in the community. I think project is an excellent example of the power of partnership working and how it can benefit the community.”
