10 November 2006 - LBFRS Receives Best Team at National Fire Awards
November 10, 2006 – Last night, Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service (LBFRS) received honours at the National Fire Awards 2006. Recognised for its comprehensive fire safety training developed for the Royal Bank of Scotland(RBS), LBFRS was recognised with the Best Team Award.
LBFRS and RBS have been in partnership since 1998 and through this partnership, The Scottish International Fire Training Centre (LBFRS’ fire training centre), developed a fire training strategy that has allowed the service to:
- Train all staff at RBS Data Centre Sites
- Train all staff ready for the occupancy of their new Global HQ in Edinburgh
- Develop a computer based training package for approximately 100,000 staff and managers
- Carry out 200 face to face training courses for some 2200 RBS fire marshals to date with training to continue
Cllr Ken Harrold, Convenor of the Lothian and Borders Fire Board said: “This shows the immense strength of our fire training facilities in delivering not only training services to our firefighters but for corporate clients as well. This is a huge accomplishment to be recognised for a programme that is used across the whole of the UK .”
Using close association with other fire and rescue services’ training centres, the training reaches approximately 100 000 employees and the information used is designed to raise awareness about fire safety both in the business and in the home setting. To complement the programme, each course attendee is offered a free smoke detector/ home safety visit by the local fire service.
The training comes in a variety of formats ranging from ‘Face to Face’, via a website, on CD and in paper version. The training used by LBFRS to deliver the service for RBS is now being used by other lead authorities. The model is cost effective and efficient for the business partner and allows the fire service to develop their reach in both the business community and society in general.
Training feedback is closely monitored and currently there is a 95% trainee satisfaction.
