19 February 2007 - Fire Service says Chip Pans Kill – Be Safe and Bin Them!
Until February 19, 2007 – Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service (LBFRS) are launching Chip Pan Safety Week (February 19-25) against shocking statistics. Food and fat pans fires have led to almost 1000 domestic fires in the Lothian and Borders area in the past three years and nationally, nearly 20 people each day are injured or killed in accidental fires in the kitchen, the most common of these caused by deep fat frying.
In order to combat the menace of chip pans, LBFRS has joined forces with Currys to offer a 25% discount on their range of thermostatically controlled deep fat fryers. The theme of the campaign urges people to bin their old style chip pan and invest in the much safer option, a thermostatically controlled deep fat fryer.
Gordon Fisher, Community Safety Firefighter says: “The best advice when it comes to chip pans is to bin them and invest in a proper deep fat fryer or use oven chips. When you look at how much you stand to lose in a fire, it just isn’t worth it. You can’t argue with the fact that that your life or your children’s lives are worth more than £9.99, the cost of a buying the safer option.”
LBFRS Firefighters have completed more than 31,000 Home Safety Checks (HSC) and 20% of these households are still using an old style chip pan. Audrey Engels (23) from Juniper Green recently suffered burns to her hands following a chip pan fire in her house on February 11.
Today, Audrey was presented with a new deep fat fryer by the Manager of the Currys Store in Hermiston Gate. Audrey will also receive a HSC from LBFRS as part of their initiative to make safer communities. A HSC offers fire safety advice and the fitting of free smoke detectors by local firefighters. Residents can call our freephone at 0800 169 0320 to arrange a free Home Safety Visit.
Currys Stores in the Lothian and Borders area are supporting this safety initiative and will be offering 25% off its entire range of thermostatically controlled deep fat fryers from February 19-25 with the presentation of the ‘Bin Them’ leaflet. This leaflet can be picked up from any local fire station or can be printed from the Fire Service website at www.lbfire.org.uk.
