07 March 2008 - New Home Safety Check Milestone

Being a Firefighter isn’t all about putting out fires – it’s also about preventing them before they happen and protecting householders and the community from their devastating effects.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service have proved just that after carrying out over 50,000 Home Safety Checks in the area.

David Mallin, Head of Community Safety for the Service said: “This is a great milestone to reach for the Home Safety Checks. Many fires which end in injury, or even death, could have been caught earlier or prevented if the right steps had been taken.”

“You’re three times more likely to die in a house fire if you don’t have a working smoke alarm. A smoke alarm will buy you valuable time if a fire breaks out in your home and it can mean the difference between getting you and your family out safely and being trapped.”

Councillor Mike Bridgman, Convener of the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service Board added: “This figure illustrates the hard work being carried out by Firefighters across the Lothian and Borders area. The information on fire safety being provided during visits is vital to all residents and can save lives.”

During the Home Safety Check, firefighters, who will work in pairs, will advise on fire safety matters such as the safe use of electrical appliances, smokers materials and candles as well as highlighting the potential hazards of cooking. The firefighters also stress the importance of having a working smoke alarm and will supply and fit free smoke detectors, complete with ten year batteries, if required.

The checks are free and confidential. The number to call to arrange a check or to access fire safety information is 0800 169 0320 or visit www.lbfire.org.uk.
