A high impact programme of Fire Safety Education is delivered to pupils in targeted schools throughout Lothian and Borders on a biennial cycle. The Education team spend a week in each of the 48 schools and cover four main themes on three levels to include pupils in P1-2, P3-4 and P5-6.
Children learn about the importance of smoke alarms, fire risks, hazards at home and the need for an escape plan for use in the event of a fire. Other subjects covered in the programme include the effects of wilful fire raising and the consequences of hoax calls on the community.
The programme is supported by a visit from local fire fighters who show pupils around and explain the workings of a modern fire engine and where children have the opportunity to ask fire fighters questions on fire and other safety issues.
A new Community Safety vehicle will soon join the programme which will enhance classroom learning by providing pupils with the opportunity to identify common causes of domestic fire in an interactive and exciting way. They will also be able to experience what it may be like to be in a fire in the on board fire scenario room.
Plans are now underway to further expand and develop our existing fire safety education programme. We are proposing to extend our programme to provide fire safety education across a larger section of the school community to further enhance community safety across our community.
