Emergency Services > Rescue from Traffic Accidents

Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) form a major part of Fire and Rescue Service work. Vehicles involved can range from small private cars to large road haulage lorries. Incidents vary in size from a small domestic car on a small country lane to a multi-lane pile up on a major motorway involving many casualties and vehicles of different types.

Working closely with other emergency services, such as medics, ambulance and police, we would extinguish any fires and carry out the extrication of trapped or injured occupants using our hydraulic cutting gear and pneumatic equipment. As well as firefighting and rescues, a large part of RTA work involves casualty handling. This includes spinal immobilisation, reassurance, administering of oxygen and basic first aid. This helps us to be of assistance to the ambulance service when they are in attendance and is especially important if the ambulance service have yet to arrive on scene.

We also secure unsafe loads and vehicles in dangerous or precarious positions. We would also make safe any hazardous materials, such as chemicals, flammables, radioactive substances, etc.
