Welcome to the homepage of the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service (LBFRS) Outreach Team

The Outreach Team engages in Positive Action and promotes diversity in Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service (LBFRS). The team operates from the Equal Opportunities Function and has two main co-ordinators, Lynne Gow and Lud Ramsey. It’s recognised at present that our service is underrepresented by people from minority groups such as women, black and minority ethnic people, LGBT groups and those with a disability. Lynne and Lud’s main role is to engage with these groups, raise awareness and promote careers in the fire and rescue service. We do this by:

  • Attending events in the community, advertised on this page
  • Holding presentations on a career as a Firefighter
  • Open Days including an introduction to the fire and rescue service
  • Fitness advisory sessions
  • Access Courses:  A nine week program for people where English is their second language
(This course is supported by external education providers)

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service is committed to employing a diverse workforce and strives to correct the under representation of particular groups and promote equal opportunities in employment and progression within the Service.

An effective Fire and Rescue Service relies on consent, trust and strong partnership, between itself and the community. This can only be achieved if those delivering the service reflect the community they serve.

Positive Action refers to a number of activities employed by an organisation, which are designed to counteract the effects of past discrimination and to minimise stereotyping. Action can be taken to encourage individuals from particular groups to take advantage of opportunities for work and training. This can be done where under representation of particular groups has been identified.

These initiatives are aimed at attracting people to consider us an employer of choice, knowing that their application will be treated equally and that selection is done on the basis of merit and the ability of that individual to carry out the job.

An important point to remember is that Positive Action activities stop at the point of selection. From then on all candidates must be treated equally and fairly throughout the selection process.

In this respect, a true equal opportunities employer will recruit the people that come out top of any recruitment process.

We are not currently recruiting, however members of the Outreach Team will be happy to talk over any queries or provide further information on what we do or the sessions we provide.
